Simon “pokerbrat13″ Charette

Simon Charette, like many of our other top poker players, hails from Toronto Ontario and is soon to be Canada’s latest to break $1,000,000 in live tournament winnings. Already a poker force to be reckoned with, the young player has become quite well known in both the live circuit and online communities.

Starting with his “brick and mortar” accomplishments, the 2010 Fallsview Classic $5,000 Main Event Champion and winner of it’s over $270,000 top prize is still in his early twenties, but has had quite the poker career so far. Having taken the game seriously for about the past 3 years now, almost all of his $950,000 in “official” live winnings to date came over the past few years, with more than $640,000 from this year alone; more than double what he won in 2010. The totals are even more impressive when you consider this player has really only entered live competition as of 2008, playing poker part time while he earned his University Degree Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in film production and screenwriting, a passion he plans to return to one day soon.

Charette started things off in 2011 with a respectable 3rd spot cash in the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em at the January PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, then followed it up in the same month with a 2nd place finish in the Aussie Millions $2,000 (AUD) Six Handed No Limit Hold’em. Next he headed to the WSOP with a mission; Simon told reporters that first and foremost he wanted to make a final table over the summer, though of course winning a bracelet and title would be the ultimate achievement. Charette set out to prove to the poker world that he was indeed amongst it’s best players, not an easy feat but we certainly feel he is off to one hell of a start!

While most will know who had Canadian WSOP gold success in 2011, Simon was quite possibly the best overall performer in regards to Canadian players at the 2011 WSOP. Cashing an impressive 6 times over the WSOP; this “little” statistic tying him at second place for most cashes by a single player at the 2011 World Series of Poker and grossing him over $450,000. After his buy-ins are accounted for, Charette’s net profit still exceeded more than four hundred thousand dollars, with his several deep runs including a heads up finish in Event #48 and locking down his pre-series goal of a WSOP final table.

Playing on the virtual felts and usually best known by his online “handles” of “pokerbrat13” (PokerStars) or “tedlogan19” (Full Tilt Poker), Simon has also rack up over $2,000,000 in multi-table tournament winnings in just the past few years, putting his combined total tournament winnings pretty much smack dab at $3,000,000.

As for his notable online accomplishments go, it’s a list most players would take in a heart-beat; Charette has previously achieved a 3rd place in the Sunday Millions worth over $92,000, made the final table on at least one other occasion and finished heads up and several other final tables in the Sunday 2nd Chance. On Full Tilt, playing as “tedlogan19”, Simon has had 3rd place finishes in both the Sunday Brawl and Sunday Mulligan. He has also won the $200,000 guaranteed re-buy tournament, finished heads up in the same on at least 2 other occasions and won the $50,000 guaranteed events twice. Last but not least, he has also already won Titan Poker’s 40k GP (Guaranteed Prize) High Roller $500.

With major tournament series EPT Barcelona and the World Poker Tour’s Grand Prix de Paris in his sights next, the question is not if Simon will break a million, it’s more along the lines of will he win a million this year alone…
