Rarely called by anything less than his given and poker name together, Greg “FBT” Mueller is one Canadian poker player that absolutely remained true to his roots after making the “big time”. If he isn’t playing a Canadian event, chances are he is doing commentary for it and has often been asked to be a guest host for some of the largest events across the country.
Just in 2010, Mueller was a “celebrity” poker player host for Canada’s largest and most successful tournament series, the British Columbia Poker Championships. He also played an important role in the 6th Annual Women’s Poker Classic at the Cascades Casino in BC, an event who’s proceeds go to support the fight against the disease that claimed his own mother.
While the acronym “FBT” attached to his name may stand for “Full Blown Tilt”, Greg is far from undisciplined and collected on the felts. Going into the 2011 WSOP, the player who makes Vancouver, British Columbia home already has a total of seven WSOP final tables with a combined total of twenty on cashes at World Series of Poker. Also chosen as the 2011 Team Canada Captain for the World Team Poker Championship, Greg’s prior experience as both a nine year professional hockey player veteran in Germany, as well as a Limit and Mixed game poker specialist were obviously top deciding factors in awarding him the leadership role.*
Greg already owns a pair of WSOP gold bracelets, having won both over the 2009 World Series of Poker in Fixed Limit Hold’em and Mixed Hold’em Events. Mueller’s first WSOP title came for winning the $10,000 World Championship of Limit Poker. Just eleven days later, he completed the matching set by taking down the $1500 Limit Shootout event. The incredible run nearly earned him the “2009 WSOP Player of The Year”, with him also having another final table over the series in the $10,000 Seven Card Stud Event. In the end, Greg was over taken for the prestigious “POY” title, but over $750,000 in winnings during the ’09 Series and even coming as close as he did definitely merits some bragging rights.
Mueller’s ability to change up his game selection,in regards to formats and disciplines has been a key factor to his success on the felts. Back in 2008, Mueller also had another second place finish in the World Series of Pokers $5000 No Limit Hold’em Shootout as well as another heads up finish in the 2007 $5000 WSOP World Championship of Mixed Hold’em.
Greg currently sits in the top twenty of the all time Canadian Money List, with over $1.8 million in career tournament cashes. Greg’s last major tournament cash was a deep 22nd place finish late in 2010, in the WSOP Europe £10,000 No Limit Hold’em Championship Event, worth $40,727.
But it isn’t all poker for Mueller, who doesn’t seem to hit the world circuit quite as much as some of the other big names. Greg remains an avid sports and culinary fan, the two things his success on the felts has allowed him to fully ennjoy. A shareholder in the Point West Food Group, as part owner of The Player’s and Whistler Chop House restaurants, Greg is obviously one of the more balanced players that has learned in life, that it takes money to make money and having investments outside of poker only help to increase the chances of being able to play your “A” game every time you do sit down. Full Blown Tilting or not, Muller won’t be dead money in any field.
Widely known for his out going and friendly demeanor, Greg’s support of charity poker here in Canada is worthy of mention and what sets him apart from many other poker “ambassadors”. Not shy to jump onboard any fully support any cause he believes him, Mueller happily spreads the word and the message with any resource at hand. Already in 2011, Greg was also one of the “Red Pros” who travelled across the country in support of The 6th Annual FTP Miriam Foundation’s “Montreal Open”, another Canadian not for profit event which supports persons with developmental disabilities. Mueller was one of the last “high profile celebrity players” standing, finishing an impressive 37th in a sold out field of 1500 entries.
Mueller has already arrived in Las Vegas to spend the summer playing the WSOP, so look for updates to his stats listed here soon.
*Greg was announced as Team Captain for the World Team Poker Championships just prior to the event being postponed due to the “ripple effects of online pokers Black Friday”. As of June 2011, a future date has not been announced.
